Despite fears that the club would be relocated, Chelsea billionaire owner Todd Boehly has confirmed his commitment to a massive redevelopment of Stamford Bridge.
Stamford Bridge is significantly smaller than the rest of the Premier League’s ‘Big Six,’ according to various reports, and the board has considered various options such as redeveloping Stamford Bridge or moving away to build another stadium.
Boehly has now promised the stadium freeholder that he will expand rather than leave Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea Pitch Owners, the shareholder group that owns the freehold of the London club’s stadium, stated, “The new owners have committed to stadium redevelopment.”
“As this project takes shape, it is expected that the group’s workload will increase.”
Chelsea co-owner Jonathan Goldstein has previously stated that the club’s stadium will be redeveloped next year.
“We are looking very heavily at redevelopment,” he said. “The planning process is something that we will start over the next year, and we’ll hope that central government will get behind it and see it as a growth engine.”
“The only issue, of course, is the management of interest rates, which makes development so much more expensive.”
When asked if the club would postpone the process, he said, “No, no, we’ll keep going as fast and as hard as we can.”
